Welcome Catherine E. Kelly, Editor of Books.
The Omohundro Institute of Early American History & Culture is delighted to announce that Catherine E. Kelly begins this month as our Editor of Books. Her appointment brings the OI’s books program into an exciting new era. Its deep traditions and reputation for excellent scholarship are a vital foundation for the innovations we seek to foster and support.
Member of the search committee and of the OI’s Council (2012-15) Jennifer L. Morgan of New York University noted that “Cathy Kelly’s appointment signals the OI’s commitment to exploring new directions in early American scholarship; we anticipate that her impact on the Institute and on the field of Vast Early America will be generative and lasting.” The search committee also included Steve Forman of W. W. Norton, Mary Kelley from the University of Michigan (OI Council (1998-2001, Chair, 2004-2007), and John Sherer, the director of the OI’s book publishing partner, the University of North Carolina Press and ex officio OI Council member, and was chaired by OI Director Karin Wulf.
Our new editor joins the OI’s talented books team, where Interim Editor of Books Paul W. Mapp concludes two years of service to the OI and to the field. She’ll be working in tandem with Associate Editor Nadine Zimmerli on acquistions and substantive editing, the experienced manuscript editing team, led by Managing Editor Virginia Chew, and the OI’s Editorial Apprentices.

Cathy Kelly will have an affiliate appointment as Professor of History at William & Mary. Provost and OI Board member Michael Halleran said “it’s a great pleasure to welcome Cathy to Williamsburg and to the OI. She’s a magnificent addition to the William & Mary community.” She is the author of Republic of Taste: Art, Politics and Everyday Life in Early America and In the New England Fashion: Reshaping Women’s Lives in the Nineteenth Century, as well as numerous essays, and co-editor of Reading Women: Literacy, Authorship, and Culture in the Atlantic World, 1500-1800. She has also served as the editor of both Common-place and Journal of the Early Republic. Her work has been supported by institutions including the American Antiquarian Society, the Historical Society of Pennsylvania, the Library Company of Philadelphia, Winterthur Museum and Library, the Massachusetts Historical Society, and the McNeil Center for Early American Studies at the University of Pennsylvania. Before joining the OI, she was the L.R. Brammer. Jr. Presidential Professor of History at the University of Oklahoma.
