Update, June 2026

The OI will continue the search for a tenure-eligible, permanent Editor of the William and Mary Quarterly in the coming academic year. We look forward to activating the networks we have built throughout Vast Early America as we enhance the visibility of this important professional opportunity.

In the meantime, we take this opportunity to thank Julia Gaffield for the extraordinary leadership she has demonstrated during her three-year term at the helm of the WMQ. The first woman and the first Caribbeanist to lead the journal, Gaffield has excelled in helping scholars gain a sharper perspective on their work and the conversations they aim to shape. The journal has thrived on her watch. Like so many members of Vast Early America, we are in her debt.

We are also delighted to announce that longtime WMQ Book Review Editor and Interim Editor of Books Nick Popper will serve as Interim Editor of the WMQ for the coming year. Popper’s deep knowledge of the OI, combined with his wide-ranging expertise, guarantees that the journal remains in fine hands.
