I met Rhys Isaac at an Institute colloquium in 2004, at a time when I had been in my first academic position for about two months. At dinner after the colloq, Rhys, myself, and several others got involved in a spirited discussion on a number of topics ranging from history to politics. Never once, on any of the subjects we covered, did Rhys even hint that I should defer to his greater experience or wisdom. Not surprisingly, my personal memories of him are of his genuine egalitarianism, his decency, and his never-ending good humor.
