Between the 1760s and early 1800s, imperial reformers and capital-rich planters transformed the Caribbean Island of Trinidad from a non-plantation space into a deadly cash-crop colony where sugar production and slavery structured much of rural life. This paper maps those grim transformations across the Spanish (pre-1797) and British (post-1797) periods of rule on the island.
Patrick Barker is the 2026 OI Postdoctoral Fellow. He received his PhD in History in 2023 from Yale University.
