The Omohundro Institute of Early American
History and Culture is the oldest organization in the United States exclusively
dedicated to the advancement of study, research, and publications bearing on
the history and culture of early America until approximately 1815. Founded as
the Institute of Early American History and Culture in 1943, by The College
of William and Mary and The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation, the Institute,
which is still jointly sponsored by those institutions, was renamed in 1996,
in recognition of a generous bequest pledged by Mr. and Mrs. Malvern H. Omohundro,
Jr. As directed by its constitution, the Institute stimulates interest in the
earliest period of American history, disseminates historical knowledge through
the publication of books and a journal, assists writers and scholars in their
work, maintains the highest standards of historical accuracy and integrity,
and furthers an understanding of the early republic. The Institute’s scope also
encompasses the Caribbean, Latin America, the British Isles, Europe, and Africa,
insofar as the study of the histories and cultures of these places is relevant
to the mainland of North America from 1500 to 1815.
Protecting Your Privacy
The Institute is committed to protecting the privacy of those who visit its
web site. The following guidelines govern our Internet privacy policy, and any
changes we make to that policy will be posted here. We welcome your comments
and suggestions.
Generation and Use of Web Site Information
Each visit to the Institute’s website produces certain non-personally identifiable
information: a logfile entry that indicates time of visit, the domain name of
your machine (e.g., “dial-54.somewhere.edu“), the file(s) (and their
sizes, in bytes) that your visit generated, and the type of web browser and
operating system you are using. This happens with most industry-standard, web-serving
software.
The Institute does not share such information with third parties. We use it
internally to facilitate your visits to our web site, to respond to your inquiries
about the Institute, to improve the site’s design, for system administration
and troubleshooting purposes, and in aggregated form, to track and analyze site
usage.
Security
The Institute does not accumulate and store information on visitors to its web
site. We use a high level of encryption to transmit credit card payment transactions
behind a firewall that protects against unauthorized access. As soon as each
transaction has been completed, the entries regarding it are deleted. Please
note that all subscription sales are final.
