ONLINE Colloq with Heather Freund

November 14, 2023, 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm EST

Join us online on Tuesday, November 14, 2023, at 5:00 pm ET for a colloquium with Heather Freund. Dr. Freund will discuss an article in progress titled, “Plotting Marronage in Early Nineteenth Century Grenada.”

The article explores marronage in early nineteenth-century Grenada through lists of runaway slaves – some of which include their names, where they fled from, and where they were captured by the Loyal Grenada Black Rangers. Paired with manuscript sources and both historical and modern maps of Grenada, it is possible to plot some of the journeys of the enslaved fugitives, illuminating common sites of marronage and the distances traveled by those seeking freedom. This article reveals a varied maroon landscape in Grenada, challenging scholarship privileging urban environments as destinations and grand marronage as the goal for all runaways.

Heather Freund is a postdoctoral researcher with In the Same Sea, a project funded by the European Research Council based at the University of Copenhagen. She received her PhD from the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign in 2021. She has published articles in Atlantic Studies and in an edited collection, Voices in the Legal Archives in the French Colonial World. Her research has been supported by the Gerda Henkel Stiftung Foundation and the AHA. She is currently working on her book manuscript, tentatively titled, A Contested Sovereignty: Race, Law, and Revolution in the British Caribbean.

The OI holds between three and six colloquia per semester to discuss projects (usually a postdoctoral book chapter or article) in progress. The paper is pre-circulated and available by request. Although only postdoctoral work is presented, graduate students at all levels are warmly encouraged to attend the sessions and participate in the discussions.

To receive a copy of the pre-circulated paper you must register in advance. All colloq participants are expected to have read the paper before the discussion and are asked to refrain from sharing the papers with others. We thank you for your observance of this request.
