Forthcoming Volume to Commemorate Slave Trade Abolition and Pan-Africanism
To commemorate two recent anniversaries of significant events centering on Africa and Africans, the two hundredth anniversary of the British abolition of the transatlantic slave trade and the fiftieth anniversary of the birth of Pan-Africanism, several prominent African historians have come together to solicit contributions for a multidisciplinary book, Two Hundred Years after the Slave Trade: Africa Talks. The organizers of the project, all of whom participated in the Omohundro Institute’s conference in Accra and Elmina, Ghana, in 2007, anticipate that contributions to the volume will especially address “the present intolerable low level of development in Africa.” Dr. Joseph A. Ushie, one of the project organizers, expressed the hope that the project will “carve a lasting legacy” out of the conversations among African historians from many different countries at the 2007 conference.
