An Endnote from the Editors
This is another summer of conferences—summer being broadly defined, as is appropriate here in Williamsburg, to include the months from April to October—and the editors of Uncommon Sense thank the many authors whose insightful and timely contributions enabled this issue to be put together in the midst of the rush. Their reflections on their experiences in the world of scholarship and teaching will, we hope, be as entertaining to all of you as they were to us. These reflections range over topics as varied as Natalie Zacek’s recounting of early Americanists’ recent activities across the pond, Dennis Maika’s ruminations on preventing senioritis among high school students, Alec Haskell’s recollections of his time as an Institute Fellow, and Edward Larkin and Thad Tate’s reminiscences about the life and scholarship of friends we recently lost. Last but not least, as promised this issue contains a more thorough treatment of last summer’s conference in Ghana, including the thoughts, reflections, and mementos of a number of attendees: Ademakinwa Adebisi, Ronald Olufemi Badru, Matilda de Beer, Ruth Drescher, Suzan Eltis, Simeon Gbor, Anselme Guézo, Aline Helg, Michael Hittleman, Warren Hofstra, Henry Kam Kah, Kamini Krishna, Martha McNamara, Canute A. Ngwa, David Northrup, Olukoya Ogen, Terhemba O’Tserakaa, Jerry Robinson, Marty Ross, Olusegun Temilola, Joseph Ushie, Warren Whatley, Marcus Wood, Karin Wulf, Cyriaque-Robert Yavoucko, and Josep Yves Zoa Zoa. Thank you for taking the time to share what the conference meant to you and what you have taken away from it.
Our next number will reach you in the fall, and we look forward to hearing from you between now and then about adventures you’d like to share with other readers of Uncommon Sense. The deadline for submissions for the next newsletter is September 15, 2008. Please keep us informed!
