Special Events

Optional activities associated with the Age of Sail conference include: buffet lunches in the AERL foyer on Friday, October 8, and Saturday, October 9, for a cost of $16 per person each day, and a banquet at Sun Sui Wah Seafood Restaurant on Friday evening, October 8, for $67 per person, not including wine. For reservations and payments, use the conference registration form.

  • Buffet Lunches at AERL

There are places to eat lunch on campus that are convenient to AERL, but these establishments will be doing a lively student business on Friday. They will be less crowded on Saturday. Given the time constraints imposed by the full schedule of sessions, conference attendees are urged to consider partaking of the buffet lunches that will be served in the foyer of AERL on Friday, October 8, and Saturday, October 9, for a cost of $16 per person each day.

  • Graduate Student Working Lunch

On Friday, October 8, Professor Daniel Vickers will host a Graduate Student Working Lunch, where graduate students will meet separate from the rest of the conference to discuss the issues in maritime history that matter to them and to network more effectively with one another free of their mentors’ and supervisors’ gaze. There is no fee for this meal; graduate students will be the guests of UBC Department of History. The repast will take place from 12:00–1:30 p.m. at the Point Grill, Building 4–2205 Lower Mall (Marine Drive Residence), on the UBC campus. All graduate students giving papers at the conference are invited, and there is space for another thirteen grad student registrants. Please check the appropriate box on the conference registration form to reserve a place.

  • Age of Sail Banquet

The Age of Sail banquet will be held at the renowned Sun Sui Wah Seafood Restaurant on Main Street in Vancouver on Friday evening, October 8, for $67 per person, not including wine. Specializing in seafood, it is the Chinese community’s restaurant of choice for celebration, and the staff excel at putting on a show, especially for crowds. The banquet menu includes crab, lobster, fish, chicken, and vegetarian fare.

Reservations and payments must be made in advance via the Conference Registration Form.
