Fifteenth Annual Institute Conference—Call for Papers

Call for Papers | Panel Locator | Electronic Submission Closed

The Fifteenth Annual Institute Conference will convene at the University of Utah, in Salt Lake City, June 11–14, 2009. Set between the majestic Wasatch Range of the Rocky Mountains and the desertscape of the Great Salt Lake, Salt Lake City marks the historical periphery of the Spanish, French, and British empires and the dividing line between the Mountain West and the Great Basin. The program committee, chaired by Eric Hinderaker (University of Utah), Brett Rushforth (College of William and Mary), and Dee E. Andrews (California State University, East Bay), seeks proposals focusing especially on interactions among indigenous, métis, and European populations in the three empires and the salience of the Pacific and Trans-Mississippi West to the history of early America. But all proposals relevant to early American history broadly conceived are welcome. Priority will be given to submissions advancing innovative thinking based on fresh research.

We encourage panels of two or three papers addressing a coherent theme or theoretical problem, including a panel chair and commentators. We will also consider individual paper proposals. The committee reserves the right to make changes in the configuration of panels. To encourage the widest possible participation, the committee will not approve more than one appearance by a scholar at the conference. Participants in the Fourteenth Annual Conference may not participate in the 2009 meeting in the same capacity, but 2008 paper presenters may comment and 2008 commentators may present. Assistance in the formation of panels is available at the Panel Locator, http://oieahc.wm.edu/conferences/panel/index.cfm.

All proposals must be submitted electronically no later than September 15, 2008. Panel proposals must be submitted by the panel organizer and include a one-paragraph description of the panel, one-page summaries of each paper, and a one-page c.v. for each presenter. Individual submissions must include a one-page proposal and a one-page c.v. Each c.v. should include mailing and email addresses and telephone numbers. All materials may be submitted online at the conference Web site—http://oieahc.wm.edu/conferences/annual/cfp/index.cfm—or by email to the Omohundro Institute’s webmaster, Kim Foley, at kawahl@wm.edu. All submissions will be acknowledged by email. If you do not receive an acknowledgement, please resubmit or contact Kim Foley.
