NEH Information Session and Grants Workshop, conducted by Douglas M. Arnold, Senior Program Officer, Division of Education Programs, National Endowment for the Humanities, will be held in the University Center’s Colony Room on Level 2, on Friday morning, 9:30–11:00, and on Saturday morning, 10:15–11:45. The sessions, which will be identical in content, will focus on the programs of the National Endowment for the Humanities, an independent grant-making agency of the United States government and the largest funder of humanities programs in the country. Topics to be addressed include:

  • An overview of NEH funding programs, including Research, Education, Public Programs, Preservation and Access, Challenge Grants, and State
  • Programs, with an emphasis on research opportunities and education programs
  • An introduction to the Endowment’s current initiatives: We the People, which focuses on American history, culture, and ideas, and the Digital Humanities Initiative
  • Examples of recently-funded NEH projects in early American history, literature, and culture
  • A discussion of the Endowment’s application and review process
  • Grant writing tips
  • Question and answer period

Women’s Caucus Breakfast, sponsored by the Society of Early Americanists, will take place Friday, June 8, 2007, 8:00–9:15 a.m., in the Empire Room C, at the Williamsburg Hospitality House.  Please join us for a continental breakfast (fruit, pastries, yogurt, juices!) and for several informal presentations on the topic of Mentoring. Two professors and three graduate students in history and literary studies will give very brief talks with the remaining time spent networking and getting to know each other better. Please join us! Katy Chiles (Northwestern University), Betsy Erkkila (Northwestern University), Heather Miyano Kopelson (University of Iowa), Lorrayne Carroll (University of Southern Maine), and Rochelle Zuck (Penn State University). The cost of the breakfast is $12 per person; reservations and payment in advance are required. Lunch at the University Center Dining Hall (available Thursday, Friday, and Saturday)
If you wish to eat lunch at the University Center Dining Hall, you must purchase meal tickets in advance. The Dining Hall is not set up to accept cash from conference groups, so be sure to purchase meal tickets if you wish to have lunch in the University Center. The cost of lunch is $10 per person, per day. You may sign up and pay for your meal ticket(s) on either the printed or the online Conference Registration Form. No meal tickets will be sold at the conference. The conference organizers urge you to consider eating lunch in the Dining Hall in view of the very full schedule of sessions.

Dinner at Jamestown Settlement, June 9, 2007
Dinner will be served in The Great Hall at Jamestown Settlement, 8:00–9:30 p.m., Saturday evening, June 9, 2007, following the reception. Reservations will be taken in order of receipt as long as seating is available, and bus transportation back to Williamsburg will be provided after dinner. Payment in advance is required, and no refunds can be made for cancellations after May 31, 2007. The cost is $66 per person. For the menu, please click here. If you wish to attend the reception at Jamestown Settlement but not the dinner, buses will be available to bring you back to Williamsburg.
